Marketing Cloud Next Is Here. Your Data Model Isn’t.
Marketing Cloud Next promises something genuinely new: describe a campaign in plain language, and an agent builds it, segments it, and ships it in hours instead of weeks. Watched on a keynote stage, it looks like magic. Pointed at most companies’ actual data, it looks like a very fast way to segment the wrong list.
The gap nobody demos
A brief-to-campaign agent has to answer questions a human marketer usually answers by instinct and institutional memory. Who is this segment, really? Which of the four “VIP customer” definitions floating around the org is the real one this quarter? Is this contact the same person as that lead, or two different records that never got merged?
A skilled marketer papers over these gaps without thinking about it. An agent doesn’t have the instinct. It has whatever the data model tells it, and it will build the campaign on top of that answer with total confidence, right or wrong.
What “agent-ready data model” means in practice
Three things, none of them exotic, all of them frequently missing:
- One definition per segment, owned by a name, not a folder. If “high-value customer” means five different things across five dashboards, an agent will pick one and you won’t know which until the campaign goes out.
- Identity resolved before the brief, not during it. The agent should be building on a clean customer graph, not attempting to resolve duplicates as a side effect of building a campaign.
- Freshness the agent can verify. A field that says “last purchase date” is only useful if the agent can trust it was updated this week, not last quarter.
The speed trade nobody mentions
The pitch is speed: hours instead of weeks. That’s true, and it cuts both ways. A bad brief used to take a marketer a day to build and a reviewer a day to catch. Now it can go from brief to live campaign before anyone reviews it at all. The review step doesn’t disappear because the build step got faster. It becomes more important, not less.
Where to start
Not with a pilot campaign. With an audit of the segments and fields the first pilot campaign will actually touch. Thirty focused minutes finding out whether “high-value customer” means one thing or five is worth more than a week of watching a fast agent build the wrong campaign beautifully.
