The Real AI Opportunity Is Happening Before Media Spend

May 28, 2026 · Mar Dat
Recently, I was back in New York for Agentforce NYC and a few client meetings.
The funny part?
The most interesting conversation I had about AI didn’t happen at the conference.
It happened the night before.
A few friends threw an impromptu dinner party on their deck overlooking Central Park West. Nothing fancy. Great food. An absurdly good 80s playlist. No laptops open. No demos. No presentations. Just people talking and laughing and trying very hard to make it through the night without mentioning the “A” word.
We almost succeeded.
Almost
Eventually, the conversation turned to all the things AI gets wrong.
One friend works for a luxury fashion brand and told a story about a client relationship that went sideways because of AI-generated recommendations. The messaging technically “worked,” but emotionally it completely missed the mark.
The client felt unseen.
Misunderstood.
Reduced to an algorithm.

The recommendations lacked context. The timing was wrong. The tone felt transactional instead of personal. It forgot something incredibly important:
Luxury isn’t just about products.
It’s about relationships.
In the end, a human design advisor had to personally go to the client’s home to repair the relationship.
And honestly, that story stayed with me the entire next day, walking through the Agentforce conference.
Because everywhere you turn right now, people are racing to talk about:
– AI-generated ads.
– AI-generated content.
– AI copilots.
– AI assistants.
– AI productivity.
And don’t get me wrong, some of it is incredibly exciting.
But I think the biggest AI opportunity isn’t happening after media spend, it’s happening before it.
That’s the real shift underway.

We Don’t Have a Content Problem Anymore

Most companies can generate content now.
That’s no longer the bottleneck.
The real problem is coordination.
– Disconnected data.
– Disconnected teams.
– Disconnected customer journeys.
– Disconnected decision-making.
One department is sending promotional emails while another is pushing SMS offers. Paid media targets customers who have already converted. Loyalty teams are trying to build relationships, while acquisition teams are oversaturating the same audience.
And customers feel it.
Not because the content is bad.
But because the experience feels disconnected.
That’s why the future of AI in marketing isn’t just about generating content faster.
It’s about orchestration.

The Future of AI Is Decisioning

The smartest companies are starting to ask different questions.
Not:
“How do we create more AI content?”
But:
“How do we make smarter decisions before marketing ever reaches the customer?”
Questions like:
• Who should actually receive this campaign?
• Does consent exist?
• Is this customer already overwhelmed?
• Is this the right channel?
• Is this the right timing?
• Should we suppress this person entirely?
• Are we prioritizing acquisition when we should focus on retention?
• Are we overspending to reach low-value audiences?
• Are multiple teams accidentally targeting the same customer?
That’s where AI becomes transformational.
Not as a content engine.
But as an orchestration layer.

Why Upstream Orchestration Matters

At Mar Dat, we spend a lot of time helping clients think through what happens before activation.
Because honestly, once media dollars are already spent, most mistakes become expensive.
The real opportunity is upstream:
• audience strategy
• identity resolution
• consent governance
• segmentation logic
• suppression frameworks
• lifecycle prioritization
• cross-channel coordination
• operational alignment
This is exactly why platforms like:
• Salesforce Data Cloud
• Agentforce
• Marketing Cloud Next
• Identity graphs
• Real-time decisioning engines
are becoming so important.
They’re moving beyond campaign execution and toward intelligent orchestration.
And that matters because modern customers don’t experience brands by department.
They experience them as one company.

5 Things Smart Brands Should Be Doing Right Now

1. Audit Your Customer Journey Overlap

Many companies don’t realize that multiple teams are communicating with the same customer simultaneously.
Map:
• Email
• SMS
• Paid media
• Loyalty
• E-commerce
• Service communications
You’ll likely find overlap, redundancy, or conflicting messaging.

2. Build Consent Into Orchestration

Consent should not live in a spreadsheet or isolated platform.
It should influence:
• Channel eligibility
• Send frequency
• Audience suppression
• Personalization logic
• AI decisioning
Consent is no longer just compliance.
It’s customer experience.

3. Stop Measuring AI Success by Content Volume

More content does not equal better marketing.
Measure:
• Engagement quality
• Customer retention
• Suppression accuracy
• Lifecycle progression
• Conversion efficiency
• Reduction in wasted spend

4. Create Cross-Functional Governance

AI cannot sit in one department.
Marketing, data, e-commerce, paid media, service, and legal teams all need alignment around:
• Data usage
• Activation rules
• Audience definitions
• Measurement frameworks
• Operational ownership

5. Remember That Human Context Still Matters

AI can identify patterns.
But humans still understand nuance.
Especially in:
• luxury
• healthcare
• financial services
• nonprofit fundraising
• relationship-driven industries
The best customer experiences will combine:
AI intelligence with human empathy. Not replace it.

The Companies That Win Will Be the Ones That Coordinate Best

The future advantage is not simply:
“Who has AI?”
It’s:
“Who orchestrates best?”
Who can:
• unify customer understanding
• reduce friction
• coordinate channels
• respect customer attention
• make intelligent decisions in real time
• balance automation with humanity
Because customers don’t want louder marketing.
They want smarter experiences.
And maybe that’s the part of the AI conversation we need to spend more time talking about.
At Mar Dat, we help organizations operationalize AI responsibly across marketing, customer experience, data, and Salesforce ecosystems.
From Marketing Cloud Next and Agentforce to Data Cloud orchestration, consent governance, lifecycle strategy, and cross-channel activation, we help brands build connected customer experiences that actually feel human.
